Fourteen-year-old Kalin Thomas said he is looking forward to meeting new people and learning new things when he journeys east from his home in California to attend the National Young Leaders conference in Washington, D.C.

"I am the only one from California attending this event Sept. 18 to 25," Kalin said by telephone from his home in Lake Isabella.

No stranger to Washington County, Kalin said he has spent time in the Sharpsburg area with Rosalie and "Hank" Jamison, his great-aunt and great-uncle.

Kalin is the son of Wes and Becky Thomas and the grandson of Phyllis Linn Secrist of Martinsburg, W.Va., and the late Kenneth Knight of Shepherdstown, W.Va.

He was chosen because of his outstanding academic achievements, according to a letter from the Congressional Youth Leadership Council.

While in the nation's capital, Kalin will join students from every state for opportunities to meet high-ranking government officials, members of Congress, international diplomats and prominent media figures.

During the week, Kalin and the other students will also get to see the national government at work.
