Couple to host ghost tours in Waynesboro

September 19, 2008

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Waynesboro residents John and Jenny Poniske will be hosting their first "Waynesboro After Dark" ghost tours on Friday and Saturday nights from Oct. 3 to Nov. 8.

The Poniskes have participated in ghost tours themselves in a variety of towns including New Orleans and London. Their tour has been modeled off those in Gettysburg and Carlisle in Pennsylvania and Harpers Ferry in West Virginia.

The Poniskes have researched the area and created two separate tours: one covering West Main Street and one covering East Main Street.

Each walk will be about three-quarters of a mile in length and last between 75 and 90 minutes. Tours will make a minimum of 15 stops.

The West Main Street Tour will begin and end at the Historical Society's Oller House on the south side of West Main Street. The East Main Street Tour will begin and end in front of Adventures In Coffee on the south side of East Main Street.

Tickets cost $12 per person, $10 for senior citizens and $6 for children accompanied by an adult. Patrons will be asked not to block the sidewalks and to be careful of uneven pavement on both tours.

The Poniskes said in a news release that they are "as interested in educating the public about the area's rich history as they are in relating colorful folk tales and stories of real life manifestations in the area."

They have dedicated all tips they receive to the upkeep of Burns Hill Cemetery.

Tours will be undertaken on a trial basis twice a night at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.

Tour reservations can be made by calling 717-788-4550.
