James W. Knotts Jr., 51



APRIL 30, 1957-SEPT. 18, 2008

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - James W. "Hot Dog" Knotts Jr., 51, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at his home.

Born April 30, 1957, he was the son of the late James W. Knotts Sr. and Genevieve Elizabeth Kiser Knotts.

He had been employed by Cushwa Construction for 20 years.

He is survived by a friend with whom he lived, John "Sonny" Willingham; two sisters, Arlene Coates and Betty Custer, both of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; one brother, Chuck Knotts of Bunker Hill; nieces; and nephews.

Per his wishes, he donated his body to West Virginia University.

A private ceremony will be held at his home.

Dale W. Garland Sr., 67



MAY 3, 1941-SEPT. 17, 2008

NEEDMORE, Pa. - Dale W. Garland Sr., 67, of 718 Garland Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born May 3, 1941 in Needmore, he was the son of the late Jack T. and Georgianna J. DeShong Garland.

He drove a bus for the Southern Fulton School District for 38 years and worked for Belfast Township for 30 years, where he was a current supervisor.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean Mellott Garland, whom he married in 1964; and one son, Dale W. Garland Jr. of Needmore.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen D. Cowell.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren in Needmore. The Rev. Roger Truax will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Needmore.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 8 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home in Harrisonville, Pa., and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.




Juan E. Ortiz, 70



DEC. 27, 1937-SEPT. 17, 2008

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Juan Enrique Ortiz, 70, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born Dec. 27, 1937, in Orocovis, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Pedro Jose Ortiz and Francisca Ortiz.

He is survived by his wife, Agueda Rodriquez Ortiz; one daughter, Elizabeth Mezquita of Long Beach, Calif.; one son, Enrique Ortiz of Martinsburg; four sisters, Blanca Correa, Hilda Ortiz and Nitza Perez, all of Connecticut, and Anna Ortiz of Puerto Rico; three brothers, Victor M. Ortiz and Pedro J. Ortiz, both of Puerto Rico, and Julio M. Ortiz of Florida; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jesus M. Ortiz; one sister, Sophia Ortiz; and one brother, Noberto Ortiz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Leo Catholic Church. The Rev. Kuchinsky will be celebrant. Burial will follow in Rosedale Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Home in Martinsburg.

Stephen L. Rowe, 45



APRIL 7, 1963-SEPT. 17, 2008

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Stephen L. Rowe, 45, of 4307 Warm Spring Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born April 7, 1963, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Georgia Miller Rowe of Greencastle and the late Ralph F. Rowe.

He was a 1981 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School.

He was employed as an estimator at Brechbill and Helman Construction Co. in Chambersburg.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Tracy J. Appleby Rowe, whom he married Sept. 1, 1994; one daughter, Nicole E. Rowe at home; and three stepsons, Tyler L. Pittman, Toby J. Pittman and Ryan C. Pittman, all at home.

A graveside service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg. The Rev. Ronald Cook will officiate.

There will be no public viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - H. John Stroud, 61, of 1541 E. Strohm Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Aug. 19, 1947, in Kittanning, Pa., he was the son of the late H. John Stroud II and Margaret Catherine Lewis Stroud.

He was a 1965 graduate of Worthington (Pa.) High School and attended Butler Community College. He received his bachelor's degree in education from Slippery Rock University in 1974 and his master's degree in education from Shippensburg (Pa.) University.

He was currently in his 35 year of teaching with the Chambersburg Area School District.

He is survived by his wife, Carol E. Stewart Stroud, whom he married June 8, 1974; four children, Rebecca S. Kotula of Vermont, and Cathy E. Stroud, Julie R. Stroud and Kristy L. Stroud, all of Chambersburg; and three grandchildren.

Services and burial will be private.
