Council approves hiring of new officer

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - The Waynesboro Borough Council on Wednesday hired a former Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., fire chief as the newest officer in the Waynesboro Police Department.

John H. Fleagle will enter into a year's probation period and be paid a starting salary of $38,355.

His hiring will bring the department to 20 officers and one school resource officer, borough officials said before the vote.

One officer, Robert Stansfield, will soon be serving in Iraq and another resigned to take a job with the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

With rumors circulating that they might soon lose another officer to Washington County, the borough council members preliminarily brainstormed ways to retain police staff.

Teachers union OKs contract extension

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - The Waynesboro Area Education Association voted after school on Wednesday and approved a yearlong extension of its current contract, according to Mike Engle, past president of the teachers union.

The Waynesboro Area School Board approved the extension on Tuesday.

The extension will give faculty a 4.5 percent salary increase and prompt negotiating to begin in January 2010.

Before this week's decisions, the latest contract covered from July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2009. The starting salary for a first-year teacher with a bachelor's degree in 2008-09 is $41,070.
