BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Luke Christie was appointed Monday night to serve the unexpired term of Margaret Gordon on the Morgan County Board of Education.

The term begins today and runs through June 30, 2010.

Christie, a local insurance agent, served as a board member for six years and did not seek re-election in 2006 when Board member David Ambrose was elected to his seat.

The board members discussed the 14 applicants who "expressed interest," in a closed meeting before making the decision, Board President Laura Smith said,

Smith said Christie was chosen because of his most recent experience. "He is the best qualified and can hit the ground running," she said.

Board member Larry Omps said any of the 14 applicants could have served.

"All are very good concerned citizens," Smith said.

Gordon resigned her position as a board member after learning her new law clerk position with 23rd Circuit Judge Gray Silver III was conflictive, Smith has said.
