September 15, 2008

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Police say a Chambersburg man stole a van that was left running in a Sheetz parking lot Friday night, only to bring it back 25 minutes later.

William Arthur Gindlesperger, 21, was arrested after a short foot pursuit and charged with motor vehicle theft and other crimes, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release.

The incident began at about 11:49 p.m., when Nancy Gabler, 50, of Chambersburg, left her 1992 Dodge Caravan running while she went in the Sheetz store on Philadelphia Avenue in Chambersburg, police said. Gabler returned to find the van gone. Two men told her they thought their friend had taken it, and said they would find him and tell him to bring it back, police said.

While troopers canvassed the area, Gindlesperger sped back into the parking lot at about 1:14 a.m., striking a curb and several bushes before parking and attempting to run away, police said.
