Catoctin students earn scholarships

September 15, 2008

FREDERICK, Md. - The Community Foundation of Frederick County has announced that 2008 Catoctin High School graduates Sarah Topper and Dusty Kidd are the first recipients of the Brady West Memorial Scholarship.

Topper will pursue a nursing degree at Hagerstown Community College, with future plans to work as a licensed nurse practitioner.

She said the Brady West Memorial Scholarship gave her the opportunity to continue her educational pursuits.

Kidd, who will study physical education at Frederick Community College, said he is honored to be one of the first recipients of the Brady West Memorial Scholarship.

Born Nov. 9, 2006, Brady was a happy little boy who died March 23, 2007, at the age of 4 months, according to a prepared release.

Brady's parents, Jaime Sweeney and Johnny West, of Thurmont, Md., created the Brady West Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation to honor Brady's memory by helping graduates of Catoctin High School pursue a post-secondary education at a college or trade school of their choice.

They said they wanted to give back to the community, since the community supported them when they lost their son.

Memorial funds are one of the ways the Community Foundation of Frederick County transforms the charitable dreams of individuals, families and organizations into the reality of charitable funds supporting a range of worthy causes.

To date, the foundation has provided more than $19 million in grants and scholarships throughout Frederick County.

Those who wish to honor Brady West's memory by helping students attain their educational goals may make an online donation to the Brady West Memorial Scholarship Fund by going to www.cffredco.org and clicking on "contribute" in the upper right- hand corner.
