Man arraigned in animal theft case

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -A Martinsburg man was arraigned Friday on a felony charge stemming from the theft of a pit bull from Berkeley County Animal Control in July 2008, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records.

Derrious Jermaine Brown, 22, of 114 Fairlawn Gardens in Martinsburg, was charged with one count of entering without breaking, according to court records.

Magistrate Joan V. Bragg set a $25,000 bond for Brown in an arraignment hearing Friday morning, records show.

Berkeley County Sheriff's Department Capt. D.S. Richmond said in his complaint that the dog stolen July 14 was worth about $2,500 and was found dead in the backyard of a home at 226 N. Spring St. in Martinsburg, where the animal was allowed to stay.

Juveniles arrested in Martinsburg burglaries

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Two boys have been charged with burglaries at homes along West Race Street and North Louisiana Avenue on July 24, 2008, Martinsburg Police Department Detective Lt. G.B. Swartwood announced Friday.

In a news release, Swartwood said the 11-year-old and 16-year-old were charged with two counts of burglary and one count of transferring stolen property and will be prosecuted as juveniles.

Police were able to recover several of the stolen items including laptop computers, iPods, a digital camera, a Sony PlayStation and jewelry that belonged to the victims, Swartwood said. Other arrests might be forthcoming, Swartwood said.

Both juveniles are Martinsburg residents. One of the burglaries happened in the 900 block of West Race Street. The other was reported in the 300 block of North Louisiana Avenue, Swartwood said.

Five liquor stores sell to underage buyer

Five of 12 liquor stores targeted Thursday by the Washington County Sheriff's Department for alcohol compliance checks allegedly sold liquor to an underage buyer.

Sgt. Robert Whittington said in a press release Friday morning that a 20-year-old was sent into 12 stores between 6 and 10 p.m. to attempt to purchase alcohol.

In five instances, liquor was sold to the underage buyer, he said.

The results of the investigation will be forwarded for charges against the businesses to the Board of License Commissioners for Washington County, known as the Liquor Board.

Md. man charged with fleeing and eluding

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - A routine traffic stop Thursday afternoon sparked a chase that led to charges against a Big Pool, Md., motorcyclist, according to Greencastle Police.

Police were trying to stop Steven Lloyd Ray, 19, at 1:32 p.m. on South Antrim Way for a minor traffic infraction when he sped off on his motorcycle, police alleged.

Police said they broke off the chase for safety reasons but later located Ray.

Charged with fleeing and eluding police and other traffic violations, Ray was released from custody after arraignment, according to officials at the Franklin County Jail.

Greencastle Police probe vehicle thefts

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Two incidents of theft from motor vehicles Tuesday were investigated by the Greencastle Police.

At 179 E. Walter Ave., $45 was reported taken from a vehicle.

A piece of radio equipment and purse were taken from a vehicle at 101 N. Linden Ave., police said.

Police ask that anyone with information about the thefts call 717-597-9506.

W.Va. man charged with possession with intent to deliver

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - An investigation of drug activity in the 300 block of West Race Street home led to a charge against a resident there.

Terry Ricardo Dodson, 46, of 396 W. Race St., Room 7, was taken into custody and charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, Martinsburg City Police said in a press release.

Officer Derek English was looking into a complaint at that address at 7:36 p.m. Thursday when he asked for and received permission to search the room at that residence.

English found a ziplocked bag that contained four smaller bags with 1.8 grams of a substance which later tested positive for cocaine, police said.

No information was available Friday afternoon on whether Dodson had been jailed or released on bond.
