Miranda Hicks' ace late in the third game triggered a late Martinsburg scoring spree Tuesday night as the Bulldogs swept past St. Maria Goretti in Apple Valley League volleyball.

After scoring 25-13 and 25-20 wins in the first two games, Martinsburg (5-5) had its hands full with the determined Gaels in the third game before Hicks went to work.

The ace snapped a 16-16 tie and Martinsburg on a 9-1 run to close out the match.

"We had a strong finish and that's a good sign," Martinsburg coach Charity Cobb said. "We've had a very tough early-season schedule and I'm pleased the way we rallied there in the third game. The old word 'momentum' kicked in. We got the momentum late and it carried us to victory. I thought our serving was good and the hits were more consistent."

Iesha Robinson led Martinsburg with 10 kills, while Yolanda Pinkcett added four kills and Hicks and Jessi Burkhart had three each.

Martinsburg jumped to an 8-2 advantage in the first game and a 13-5 lead in the second game and held the upper hand but the third game was different.

Goretti (0-5) led throughout the early portions and enjoyed a 10-6 advantage when Cobb called a time out.

The Bulldogs gradually closed the gap and then pulled away following the ace by Hicks.

"I saw some improvement tonight but we again wasted a good lead," Goretti coach Leah Easterday said. "We were up by nine against St. James on Saturday and allowed them back in the game. And tonight, the same thing happened."

Courtney Thompson led Goretti with seven kills, three aces and nine digs while Natalie Ferretti collected 14 assists and two kills and Catie Breslin five kills, one block and 11 digs.
