Man waives hearing in Pa. purse-snatching case

September 10, 2008

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- A Chambersburg man charged in a purse-snatching waived his preliminary hearing Tuesday in Franklin County Central Court, but his father still is at large, Franklin County District Attorney John F. Nelson said.

Robert L. Sprow is charged by the Chambersburg Police Department with criminal conspiracy to commit robbery in the Aug. 2 incident outside Chambersburg's municipal pool.

Bradley Sprow, 46, of Fayetteville, Pa., whom police said actually assaulted the woman and took the purse, is charged with robbery, theft and simple assault, according to court records. Sprow is a fugitive, Nelson said.

Police said a woman walking to her van was shoved from behind and her purse was stolen by an older man who then got into a red car and was driven off. The purse contained $48 in cash, police said.

A witness told police she saw a younger man getting into the car earlier, police said. The woman saw the car the next day parked outside a supermarket and called police, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

Robert Sprow also is charged with theft from a motor vehicle. The Chambersburg Police Department said he was charged in the April 25 theft of a catalytic converter from a Jeep Cherokee parked at a business on Vine Street.

Robert Sprow was scheduled for mandatory arraignment in county court in October, according to court records.
