Martin's to open new store north of Hagerstown

September 09, 2008

HAGERSTOWN -- Martin's Food Markets will open the doors of its newest store at 18726 N. Pointe Drive on Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8 a.m.

The 85,000-square-foot store north of Hagerstown will replace the existing Martin's at 13206 Fountainhead Plaza. That store will close for business today at 6 p.m.

The new store will be open 24 hours a day and will employ approximately 300 full-time and part-time workers, more than double the number who worked at the Fountainhead Plaza store, the food retailer said in a prepared release.

Colin Snyder has been named store manager of the new Martin's, the release says. Snyder, of Chambersburg, Pa., has nearly 30 years of experience in the grocery store business and most recently was the store manager at the Fountainhead Plaza Martin's.

"This Martin's will offer our customers an expanded selection of items in virtually every department," Synder said in the release.

Wednesday's festivities get under way at 7:30 a.m. with The Tom Skidmore and Johnny Moore Duo playing Dixieland jazz.

Following the ribbon-cutting, $14,000 in checks will be presented to community groups, the release says.

Martin's Food Markets is operated by Giant Food Stores, which has its headquarters in Carlisle, Pa.

In operation since 1923, Giant purchased its first Martin's Food Market, which was in Hagerstown, in 1970 from Maurice and Menno Martin.

Giant Food Stores LLC operates stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia under the names of Giant Food Stores, Martin's Food Markets and FoodSource.
