Hagerstown Community College's Center for Continuing Education is offering a variety of art classes in mediums such as chair caning, painting and rug hooking.

The first class, "Learn the Heritage Craft of Chair Caning," is taught by HCC instructor Jo Lum of Living Waters Chair Caning. Students will learn how to restore items such as rocking chairs, foot stools, piano benches and dining room chairs through the art of seat weaving. Students are encouraged to bring items to class that they'd like to work on and are also asked to bring the following supplies: scissors, towel, measuring tape, bucket, pencil, a dozen clothespins and paper. Two sections of this course are offered. The first section meets on Tuesdays, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Valley Mall Center, from Sept. 16 through Nov. 25. The second section meets on Thursdays, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Little Antietam Community Center, from Sept. 18 through Nov. 20.

The second class, "Painting, Acrylic and Oil," focuses on teaching students the basics of painting through individual instruction. Students may chose the subjects they wish to paint and are encouraged to bring a photo or picture as inspiration. The course is offered on Mondays, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., through Oct. 13 and again from Nov. 3 through Dec. 8.

The third class, "Basic Rug Hooking," is offered on Tuesdays, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., from Sept. 23 through Oct. 14. Taught by HCC instructor Shelly Martin, this class illustrates and teaches basic rug hooking techniques. Students will also study the history of rug hooking, as well as learn about colors, materials and edge finishing.

The fourth class, "Tole Painting," is offered on Thursdays, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., from Nov. 6 through Dec. 18. This course focuses on painting a variety of items using the traditional "tole" stroke-work. Students are encouraged to paint on wood, metal, paper, canvas or novelty cutouts. Beginning, intermediate and advanced painters are welcome.
