Funkstown hires new trash contractor

FUNKSTOWN - A 4-1 vote to change waste collection contractors Monday night was a sign of the times - a lower bid won out over a proven track record.

Allied Waste Services of 11710 Greencastle Pike won the contract to provide twice-weekly collection for 388 units plus yard waste, collection from several Dumpsters and Christmas tree pickup.

Greenscape Trash of Williamsport had been providing trash pickup - without a contract since June - for more than a year.

"Your service has been awesome - the best we've ever had," said Councilman John Phillips III. "But $6,000 is $6,000."

That was the difference between the two bids for the trash pickup contract, according to the bid letters from the two firms.

Assistant Mayor Paul N. Crampton Jr. was visibly upset about the fact that one bid was so much lower than the other.

"I just can't do it," Crampton said when the time came to vote for one company over another, and he voted for Allied, which had the lower bid.

The single "no" vote came from Councilman Kim Ramer.

While Mayor Robert L. Kline had no vote on the issue, he shared his opinion after the vote.

"I think you are going the wrong way," Kline said to the council.
