Russ has huge day for Saints

FRONT ROYAL, Va. -- It took an extra day for St. James to open its season following the rain from Tropical Storm Hanna, and Mike Russ wasn't the least bit rusty.

The Saints' senior quarterback set the standard for passing this season, throwing for 508 yards and three touchdown and running for three more as St. James recorded a 41-35 victory over Randolph-Macon Academy.

Russ completed 20 of 37 passes, and when he didn't use his arm he used his legs, scoring the winning TD with 30 seconds remaining.

"We took advantage of some quick slants and then went to some pump-and-go routes," said Saints coach Chris Milmoe, a winner in his St. James debut.

Trailing 35-34 with just under two minutes remaining after Randolph-Macon scored on Josh White's 1-yard run and Vincent Thibodeau kicked the extra point, the Saints made their march downfield.

A key 39-yard pass from Russ to Dylan Zimmerman set up Russ' 4-yard run for the winning score.

Russ connected twice with Spencer Draper for scores from 76 and 11 yards, and hit Zimmerman with a 14-yard TD pass. Russ also had scoring runs of 2 and 11 yards.

Jordan Barr made eight receptions for 167 yards, Draper had five for 139 yards and Zimmerman added five for 125 yards.

Randolph-Macon had 407 yards rushing. Tailback Victor McKoy did most of the damage and had scoring runs of 49, 68 and 67 yards along with an 88-yard kickoff return.

"We'll look at some films defensively," said Milmoe. "My heart was pounding all the way to end."
