St. Albans scores late to stun Mercersburg

September 08, 2008

WASHINGTON -- A successful two-point conversion was the difference between victory and defeat for Mercersburg Academy on Sunday.

After scoring with 1:16 remaining to get within a point at 21-20, St. Albans quarterback Henry Brooke connected with Ramsey Bates on a conversion that left the Blue Storm on the wrong end of a 22-21 season-opening defeat.

Trevor Smith scored three times for Mercersburg, twice from a yard out and once from the 2. He completed 13 of 27 passes for 205 yards, with Matt Young hauling in six receptions for 67 yards and Jordan Jefferson four for 73.

Mercersburg led 21-14 and had the football late in the fourth quarter, but the Blue Storm gave it away on an interception which coach Dan Walker blamed on himself.

"I take responsibility for the loss. I should have protected the lead and not called a pass," he said.

Troy Harrison rushed 14 times for 82 yards for Mercersburg.
