Gerad D. House received a masters of mechanical engineering degree May 21 from Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering.

Gerad is a 1999 graduate of Smithsburg High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland James A. Clark School of Engineering in December 2003.

He is employed at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Md., as a project manager in the National Security Technology Department.

Gerad is married to Kathryn O'Malley House and is the son of Gerald and Sharyn House of Hagerstown.

CHICAGO - The following local students were honored by Kaplan University during commencement ceremony recently at the Chicago Symphony Theatre:

Kristie Lawson of Hagerstown, was awarded a bachelor of science degree in business

Lauri Murphy of Hagers-town was awarded a bachelor of science degree in management.

Penny S. Fletcher of Hagerstown was awarded an associate of applied science degree in business administration.

Karen Poston of Hagerstown was awarded a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice.

Cassandra M. Larkin of Frederick, Md., was awarded a legal secretary certificate.

SAN ANTONIO - Joshua Aldana of Myersville, Md., graduated May 17 from Trinity University with a bachelor of science degree in computer science.

FREDERICK, Md. - Several local students were honored for their academic achievements at a convocation ceremony at Hood College. Students who qualify for the convocation honors have sophomore, junior or senior status; have at least a 3.6 grade-point average for the preceding academic year; have taken at least 12 credit hours on a letter grade basis during each semester; and have no outstanding incomplete grades.

Students who are named Hood Scholars have received convocation honors for at least two consecutive years at Hood.
