CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Western Carolina junior Shannon Fowkes, a Smithsburg graduate, scored a goal five minutes into the second overtime period Friday to lift the Catamounts (1-2) to a 1-0 victory over Butler.

Shepherd drops pair in tourney

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- Shepherd University went 0-2 in first-day action at the East Stroudsburg University Tournament. The Rams were swept 3-0 by Queens (N.Y.) and later lost 3-1 to Clarion.

Emily McCoy had 10 kills for Shepherd (2-5) against Queens, while Ryan Mills had 11 digs and Jessica Ambrose added 17 assists.

Julie Robertson had 19 digs and Lauren Jeschelnik added 19 digs and eight kills in the Rams' loss to Clarion.

Local pros share title

BALTIMORE -- Head pro Jim Schouller and assistant Brian Boggs of Fountain Head Country Club claimed a share of the first-place pot in the GolfMat Fall Pro-Assistant Championship at Elkridge Golf Club.

Schouller and Boggs put together a 4-under-par 67 to share the top spot with five other groups in the event, conducted by the Middle Atlantic PGA.

Holes-in-one

Woody Guessford, 91, of Hagerstown, posted his fourth career hole-in-one at Beaver Creek Country Club.

Guessford, who used a 5-wood to ace the 127-yard third hole, was accompanied by Lee Ridenour, Ray Larsen and John Werking.

Paul Weisz recorded his first hole-in-one at Fountain Head Country Club, using a 6-iron on the 143-yard 16th hole. He was playing with Dennis Donegan.
