Speaker to discuss Israel-Palestine conflict

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - The Jefferson County Organization of Democratic Women (JCODW) will feature former journalist Alison Weir on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m. in the basement of the Old Charles Town Library

Weir will speak on "Israel-Palestine: Beyond the Headlines." The free event is open to the public.

Weir will present a multimedia presentation on her travels to the West Bank and Gaza and discuss media coverage of events in Israel and Palestine.

Weir speaks widely throughout the nation, has given two briefings on Capital Hill and has spoken at the Asia Media Summit in Kuala Lumpur. Weir is the Executive Director of If Americans Knew, a think tank that focuses on Israel-Palestine and specializes in media analysis.


Composting workshop scheduled for Sept. 13

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Wilson College's Fulton Center for Sustainable Living, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Penn State Cooperative Extension are teaming up to offer a free composting workshop for Franklin County residents on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Wilson's Fulton Farm.

Each person who pre-registers for the workshop and attends will receive a free composting bin while supplies last. Only one bin will be given per household.

The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants should come to the Owens Barn on the farm, which is to the rear of the Wilson campus. Seating is limited to the first 25 people who register.

Pa. fire company gets FEMA grant

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - The MMP&W Volunteer Fire Co. has been awarded a $51,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, according to a news release.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant has been earmarked for operations and safety, the news release stated.

Chambersburg YMCA offers free snorkeling and SCUBA class

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Chambersburg YMCA will offer a free snorkeling and introduction to SCUBA class tonight from 7 to 8 p.m.

Waynesboro YMCA offers tumbling class

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - The Waynesboro Area YMCA will offer a tumbling skills class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. beginning Sept. 9.

Participants will use an air track and spotting belt to improve skills used in gymnastics and cheerleading.
