Smithsburg EMS respond to 81 calls in August

SMITHSBURG - For the month of August, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to 81 calls for service, bringing the 2008 total to 725 calls as of Sept. 1.

James Ulrich, assistant chief, said the calls for August included 24 within Smithsburg town limits and five to the Leitersburg area. The Mount Aetna area had only two calls, and eight calls were to Cascade and Pen Mar.

Mutual-aid calls to neighboring counties included seven to Frederick County, Md., and six to Franklin County, Pa.

During August, SEMS provided a transfer crew to the Clear Spring Ambulance Club to cover calls during the annual fire company carnival.

Smithsburg also sent an ambulance and crew to Hancock Rescue Squad's station to cover its calls during a portion of a recent standoff there.

Personnel from SEMS transported 57 patients to local hospitals during the month and one patient was flown to York (Pa.) Hospital after a vehicle crash near Waynesboro, Pa.
