Fun and games - Junior football kicks off season with ceremony, 8 games

Players learn more than the game

HALFWAY - The Washington County Junior Football League held its traditional opening ceremonies on Labor Day.

But after the pageantry was over, it was time for football - eight games of 'A' and 'B' play.

"There is a lot of preparation that goes into it," league president Pete Buonocore said. "It takes a lot of work to get these games off. Opening weekend is the hardest time. It is making sure of not forgetting anything and making sure that all of the details are covered. There is a lot of people that come together to make this happen."

The Smithsburg Jets scored a 26-0 victory over the Hagerstown Buccaneers in an 'A' game. Quarterback Zane Gardenhour had 94 rushing yards, including touchdowns of 50 and 20 yards. Travis Leopold added 80 rushing yards, with a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs, and a pair of conversion runs.


The Buccaneers won the 'B' game by squeezing out a 12-6 overtime win over the Jets on Troy White's game-winning, 15-yard touchdown run. Raughn Carter had 135 yards rushing for the Buccaneers and returned the opening kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown. Joey Schwartz got a 1-yard touchdown run for the Jets.

The Hancock Raiders swept a pair of games from the Hagerstown Dolphins.

Quarterback Conner Litton rushed for 79 yards, including 11- and 57-yard touchdown runs, to guide the Raiders to a 27-7 win in the 'B' game. Litton also threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Jesse Wolford. Wolford added a 20-yard touchdown run for the Raiders. Elijah Miller had a 53-yard touchdown run for the Dolphins.

Nick Smartt had a 20-yard touchdown run for the only score to lead the Raiders past the Dolphins 6-0 in the 'A' game. Tanner Faith rushed for 135 yards for the Raiders.

Mitchell Wilson had 130 rushing yards and touchdowns of 25, 60 and 37 yards to help the Hagerstown Packers to a 25-6 'B' win over the Boonsboro Titans. Dmorea James added a 39-yard touchdown run for the Packers. Johnathon Kerins had an 8-yard touchdown run for the Titans.

Justin Green rushed for 120 yards with toucdown runs of 5 and 68 yards to help the Titans beat the Packers 32-6 in the 'A' game. Caleb Grove, Chad Cowden and Aaron Roby each ran for touchdowns for the Titans.

Quarterback Dylan Brown passed for 97 yards and two touchdowns to Riley Lazich to lead the Clear Spring Chargers to a 19-12 'B' win over the Hagerstown Browns. Lazich added a 5-yard touchdown run for the Chargers. Preston Carey got two touchdowns on a 34-yard run and a 30-yard interception for the Browns.

Quarterback Tre Anderson ran for 110 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown run, to help the Browns edge the Chargers 13-12 in the 'A' game. Anthony Rocha had a 52-yard touchdown run for the Browns. Stephen Smith ended up with 123 yards rushing, including a pair of 1-yard touchdowns, for the Chargers.
