Samuel David Shugars Jr. 85

MCHENRY, Md. - Samuel David Shugars Jr., 85, of McHenry, Md., died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Garrett Memorial Hospital in Oakland, Md.

Born April 26, 1923, in Shippensburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel David Shugars Sr. and Anna Zinn Shugars.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Forrest Shugars; two sisters, Virginia S. Griffin and Helen Spence; and by a sister-in-law, Gladys Wood.


Mr. Shugars grew up and attended school in Hancock, Md. He served in the Army Air Force, 302nd Fighter Squadron, as a staff sergeant and air traffic controller in Iwo Jima. He also was a swim instructor while stationed in Hawaii.

He worked for 42 years as an engineer for Penn Central & Conway Railroad while living in Hagerstown, Md. After retiring from the railroad, he moved to Deep Creek Lake, Oakland, in 1987. From 1987 until 2002, he was the property manager at Red Run & Ski Harbor Condominiums. He loved to dance and travel.

He was a member of Christ Reformed Church, Hagerstown, the VFW Post 695, Redmen, the Eagles Club Inc., the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engine Men, and the United Transportation Union.

He is survived by his wife, Goldie M. (Wood) Shugars; daughter, Susan M. Langenstein and husband, Chuck, of Hagerstown; stepson, Mitchell Forsyth and wife, Diane, of Havre, Montana; granddaughters, Tammy S. Arnold and husband, Rusty, of Hagerstown, and Ashley Forsyth and Jennifer Forsyth, both of Havre; great-grandson, Logan M. Arnold of Hagerstown; brothers-in-law, James Wood of Hagerstown and Robert Wood of Frederick, Md.; niece, Veronica (Ronnie) Eighelberger; and nephews, Paul Steven Griffin, David Ragan Griffin, David Spence and Jeff Spence.

The family will receive friends at David A. Burdock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N. Second St., Oakland, on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m.

There will also be a visitation on Wednesday Sept. 3, 2008, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. Hagerstown.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Minnich Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will be in Cedar Lawn Cemetery.

Dorothy D. Ambrose, 79

SEPT. 24, 1928-AUG. 29, 2008

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Dorothy D. "Dot" Duffy Ambrose, 79, of 11830 Orlando Circle, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at Quincy (Pa.) Village.

Born Sept. 24, 1928, in Ringgold, she was the daughter of the late Ephraim B. and Mary A. West Duffy.

Her husband, Richard E. "Dick" Ambrose, died May 2, 2004. They were married Dec. 26, 1948.

She was a 1946 graduate of Waynesboro High School.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Jesus Alive Ministries of Waynesboro.

She is survived by one son, Donald L. Ambrose of Waynesboro; one sister, Kathleen M. Rock of Waynesboro; and two granddaughters, Kelli S. Geesaman, who is stationed in South Korea with her husband, and Courtney L. Ambrose of Waynesboro.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kimberly S. Beeler.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Jesus Alive Ministries, Waynesboro. Pastor Randy Davis and the Rev. Walter A. Stuart will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jesus Alive Ministries Building Fund, 114 Walnut St., Waynesboro, PA 17268.

Thelma L. Hensley, 83

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Thelma L. Hensley, 83, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Care Haven Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 19, 1924, in Front Royal, Va., she was the daughter of the late Otis Nicholson and Elizabeth Corbin.

She was a fruit picker for National Fruit Co.

She is survived by one son, Lewis J. Funk of Martinsburg; three sisters, Barbara Riggleman of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Dorothy Nicholson and Florine Nicholson, both of Front Royal; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Margaret A. Messick; four sisters, Bessie Smoot, Rhoda Prince, Catherine Nicholson and Emily Frazier; two brothers, Otis Nicholson Jr. and Earl Nicholson; and three grandsons.

Services will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Home, Martinsburg. Pastor Nathaniel Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Front Royal at a later date.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Betty R. Tattersall, 59

MARCH 1, 1949-AUG. 30, 2008

Betty Ruth Tattersall, 59, of 20 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at her home.

Born March 1, 1949, in Big Spring, Md., she was the daughter of the late Richard H. Boppe and Clara R. Burkett Boppe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Franklin Tattersall.

She was previously employed by Washington County Board of Education as a cafeteria aide.

She attended Star of Hope Chapel in Williamsport.
