Driver crashes into pole after chase

September 01, 2008

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - A driver crashed into a utility pole Sunday morning while fleeing from police on W.Va. 9 near Hedgesville, the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.

The incident began at about 6:05 a.m. when Berkeley County Central Dispatch received a cell phone call from a Virginia woman who refused to give her name and was threatening to harm herself, deputies said. The woman said she was driving a Plymouth Neon, and satellite locating revealed she was near the Back Creek bridge on W.Va. 9, deputies said.

Deputies spotted a Plymouth Neon driving slowly east on W.Va. 9 and attempted to pull it over, but the driver accelerated and pulled back onto W.Va. 9 toward Martinsburg, deputies said. After passing a Sunoco station, it looked as though the driver was going to jump from the car and run, but the car crashed into a utility pole, deputies said.

The driver did not appear to be injured but was transported from the scene for a possible overdose and a psychological evaluation, deputies said. The department did not release the driver's name.
