Charleston 2, Shepherd 1

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Sabrina Mullaney scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Charleston over Shepherd University in the season opener for both teams.

Mullaney scored in the game's eighth minute and 75th minute to give Charleston a 2-0 lead.

Shepherd cut the lead to 2-1 when Melanie Ranslem scored on an assist from Brianna Hines in the 80th minute.

HCC men fourth at Ship

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Hagerstown Community College finished fourth out of six men's teams with 123 points at the Shippensburg Invitational. Dickinson won with 35.

Dustin Adams led the Hawks on the 6-kilometer course, placing 24th in the 98-runner field in 20:48. Also for HCC, Corey Centofonti was 27th in 20:53, Jeremiah Wilt was 30th in 20:58, Mike Podlesnik was 34th in 21:02 and Justin Cole was 36th in 21:05.

Jordan Atha led HCC's incomplete women's team, finishing 31st out of 72 on the 4K course in 17:02.

Freshman Neely Spence won the race in 14:37, leading the Shippensburg women to the team title.

HCC splits in Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Hagerstown Community College split its six matches Friday and Saturday in the Owens Community College Tournament.

The Hawks (3-3) beat Kellogg CC 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 before losing to Columbus State, 10-25, 24-26, 22-25 on Friday.

They played four matches on Saturday, going 2-2. HCC beat Lakeland CC 25-19, 25-14, 21-25, 21-25, 15-13 and Schoolcraft 25-9, 25-23, 18-25, 19-25, 15-10, but lost to Owens 14-25, 15-25, 21-25 and Kalamazoo Valley CC 21-25, 18-25, 10-25.

Tara Garver had 106 assists and 12 aces in Saturday's four matches. Rebecca Morgan had 46 kills and 31 digs, Morena Ribiero had 26 kills, Julia Becker had 22 kills and 16 digs and Hailee Growden had 27 digs and eight aces.

The Hawks close out the tournament today with matches against Mott CC and Jackson CC. They open the Maryland JuCo Conference season at home Wednesday against Anne Arundel.
