Child-care provider courses offered

This fall, Hagerstown Community College's Center for Continuing Education is offering a variety of certification courses geared toward child-care providers.

The first course, School Age Child Care Seminar I, is offered on Thursdays, from Sept. 4 to Dec. 18, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Fun and Learning Center on Corello Drive in Hagerstown. The course satisfies the Maryland Child Care Administration requirements for group leaders in school-age child-care settings. Topics include behavior management strategies, scheduling and age-appropriate activities.

The second course, Preschool Child Care I, is offered on Tuesdays, from Sept. 16 to Dec. 9, from 6 to 10 p.m. on HCC's main campus. This course is the first of three classed required by the Maryland Office of Child Care in order to become a senior staff member in any preschool facility that administers care to ages 2 to 6.

The fall section of Child Care Communications, titled "Communication Skills for Child Care Professionals," is a new course offered on Saturdays, Sept. 6 and 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., on HCC's main campus. This course is required by the Maryland Office of Child Care and can be used for nine hours of child-care continuing education in the core of knowledge category of "professionalism." The spring section begins Jan. 10.

Certifying swimming pool operators

Hagerstown Community College's Center for Continuing Education is offering two courses geared toward preparing students to become certified swimming pool operators.

The first course is intended to prepare uncertified students to take and pass the State of Maryland Health Department Examination, which is now required by the state for all practicing pool operators.

Students are required to receive a passing grade of 75 percent or better.

Upon completion of the course, student records will be submitted to receive certification as a public pool/spa operator. The course will be offered from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 9 and 10.

The second class offered is a renewal course and is intended for existing pool and spa operators that have already been certified.

The Certified Pool Operator Update Course provides students with updated information as required by the Maryland Department of Health for the safe operation of public swimming pools, spas and hot tubs.

Topics include a review of the current policies and procedures, as well as updated changes to laws and responsibilities of pool/spa operators. The course is offered from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
