Washington Township Police investigating park vandalism

August 29, 2008

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- The Washington Township Police Department was investigating vandalism at the Pine Hill Recreation Area at 12684 Mentzer Gap Road and the Dunlap Family Skatepark that occurred between Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. and Thursday at 5:41 a.m.

"A couple of people, we believe, entered the park and went crazy with spray paint," Police Chief Barry Keller said Friday.

Surfaces and obstacles in the skateboard park were spray painted, as well as signs, a storage building and other surfaces in the recreation area, Keller said.

The graffiti, which included obscenities and inappropriate drawings, covered 40 or more surfaces in the park, Keller said. It was discovered as township employees were opening the recreation area, he said.

An estimate on the cost to repair the damage was not available Friday, Keller said.

When the park closes at dusk, there is a gate that blocks vehicles from entering, but not people on foot, Keller said.

"We're still hoping that some of the kids who use the park frequently ... will help us identify the people responsible for this," Keller said.
