WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Live music and a firetruck display have been added to the offerings of the next Friday After 5 event in downtown Waynesboro.

The 5 to 8 p.m. event on Sept. 5 is designed to complement businesses' specials and discounts with things like sweet potato fries, funnel cakes, music by the Boro Boogie Pickers and face painting. Paperwork from nonprofit organization Main Street Waynesboro Inc. promises that at least 20 businesses will be open until 8 p.m. or later.

"This event is to bring in the community so that they see Waynesboro doesn't shut down at 5 o'clock," said Cyndie Flasher, a representative of Main Street Waynesboro Inc.

Businesses that have received grant money through the Downtown Business Incentive program are required to stay open until 8 p.m. on Fridays. Flasher said the Friday After 5 events have been held to bring people to those shops.

"It's a new event for this year, and this will be the fourth one," she said.

Flasher said the organization hopes to be able to close the Center Square entrance to South Church Street and prohibit parking on the south end of the square. That way, part of the square could be used for the firetruck and other booths.

Zoe's Chocolates and Tucked Away Treasures, both on East Main Street, each will celebrate their first year in business during Friday After 5.

"Many (businesses) are having discounts for the event," Flasher said.
