Bids for Waynesboro square project from $2.8 million to $3.2 million

August 28, 2008

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation opened two bids Thursday for Waynesboro's Center Square reconfiguration project, and identified the apparent low bidder as an Atglen, Pa., company proposing to do the work for $2.8 million.

J.D. Eckman Inc.'s documents now will be reviewed to ensure the company met all specifications, PennDOT spokesman Michael Crochunis said.

The other bid submitted, from M.J. Electric Inc., totaled $3.2 million, Crochunis said.

The project, which has been 10 years in the making, will "bump out" the corners of sidewalks so they extend farther into the intersection. Traffic lights on Pa. 16 will be synchronized.

PennDOT recently removed the resurfacing of Pa. 16 from the project due to the escalating costs of asphalt, but a spokesman said those efforts will be bid separately next year.
