Helping hands - Saluting volunteers

Name: Ruth South

Age: 95

Resides in: Hagerstown

Q: Where do you volunteer and what do you do there?

A: I taught Sunday school, first at St. James Brethren Church and then at First Christian Church in Hagerstown.

Q: What prompted you to begin volunteering?

A: There seemed to be a need wherever I went ... that was enough for me.

Q: Your biggest reward as a volunteer?

A: I liked that I could do something to help. And then I felt I couldn't do enough.

(Ruth will be inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in a ceremony Oct. 23 in Glen Burnie, Md.)


Q: What impact has volunteering had on your life?

A: A lot of new friends have come into my life. It's all about being close to God.

Q: What keeps you busy when you're not volunteering?

A: Crocheting lab robes for my current church, Boonsboro Christian Church, and for the Manor Church Senior Citizens Club.
