Middletown Middle School to open Thursday

August 27, 2008

MIDDLETOWN, Md. -- Middletown Middle is cleared to open on time Thursday. The school closed at noon today due to smoke in an electrical panel, Frederick County Public Schools' communication services announced.

No flames were reported and all students and staff members were safe, school officials said. They were evacuated at about 9 a.m. to the gym at Middletown High School, officials said.

Small groups of students, under the supervision of the fire department, were able to return to the building with administrators or teachers to retrieve personal items, the announcement said.

Due to smoke in the building, all evening activities scheduled inside Middletown Middle School today have been canceled. Outdoor activities will be held as scheduled, school officials said.
