Carnival under way

The Williamsport Carnival, sponsored by the Downsville Ruritan Club and the Funkstown Rod and Gun Club, is under way.

The carnival is off Springfield Lane on Pavilion 3 parking lot. Entertainment tonight is by A Touch of Country with shows at 7 and 9.

Thursday is Karaoke Night; please sign up at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show. Cash prizes will be given away. On Friday, Hicktown, sponsored by the Downsville General Store, will perform at 7:30 and 9 p.m. On Saturday, the last night of the carnival, there will be a cruise-in from 5 to 9 p.m., sponsored by the Classic Car Group for Children. In addition, the carnival offers food stands, a midway and rides by Snyder Amusements Inc.

The carnival is open every night until 10 p.m.

Scooter drawing

The drawing for the Williamsport Volunteer Fire and EMS "Red Super Scooter" was held Aug. 20 and Jason Kline from Smithsburg won.

Williamsport Days

Bobby Cole and the Williamsport Days committee did a great job. See you next year on Aug. 22 and 23.

The Williamsport Girls and Women in Sports Committee would like to thank everyone who purchased a raffle ticket at Williamsport Days.

Troop 58

Boy Scout Troop 58 of Downsville will celebrate its 60th anniversary on Sept. 6 at 3:30 p.m. at Camp Merrimac. If you were a member of Troop 58, you are invited to attend the celebration. WHS Athletic Boosters

Old photos

Do you have a photo of the old hosiery factory with the big old stocking sign that used to hang on it? The factory was on the corner of East Potomac and Artizan streets. The Town Museum committee would like to have a copy of it for its town business display. The Town Museum is open Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. or you can call Jerry Knode at 301-223-7229.

Riverview Cemetery

The Riverview Cemetery Association in Williamsport is seeking the community's help through donations to provide funds for restoration and maintenance of the cemetery.

Resurfacing of the cemetery entrance road from Church Street was recently completed and plans to resurface other parts are scheduled.

Once the grass mowing season is over, the helpers from the prison will work to fix up the monuments and grounds. The goal is to renew an organized peaceful resting place for the many deceased members of families of Williamsport and surrounding areas and a place of calm for visitors.

He can shoot

"Tiny" Brandenburg called with news about her son, Bob Knode.

He participated in the Grand American Trapshooting Championship in Sparta, Ill. Out of 3,500 participants, he took third place. In one round, Bob shot 99 claybirds out of 100. He received a trophy, $2,000 and several boxes of shotgun shells.

TOPS 454

The TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 454 in Williamsport, has openings for new members. The chapter offers light exercise, programs and fellowship. The chapter meets Tuesdays at Zion Lutheran Church, 35 W. Potomac St., Williamsport.

Private weigh-in starts at 10:15 a.m., light exercise is at 10:45 a.m. and the meeting begins at 11 a.m.

Springfield Middle School news

Sept. 4 -- Springfield Middle School student pictures will be taken starting at 8 a.m. All students will have their pictures taken for the yearbook. A picture make-up day will be scheduled at a later date.

Sept. 5 -- Eighth-grade vision screenings will take place starting at 8 a.m.

Also, a dance will be held for sixth-graders and WEB leaders from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Springfield Middle Jazz Band practice is held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Marching Band practice is held Wednesdays from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
