Suns close out series with a win

August 25, 2008

The Hagerstown Suns scored four runs in the fifth inning and held off the Delmarva Shorebirds 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.

The Suns (24-38) won three of the five games in the series with Delmarva (34-27).

Jake Rogers, Garrett Bass, Mark Gildea and Valerio Heredia hit consecutive RBI singles off Zach Britton (11-7) with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Suns a 4-1 lead and all the runs they'd need.

Hagerstown starter Cole Kimball (6-9) pitched five innings for the win. He allowed one run, three hits and three walks while striking out seven.

Ryan Harrison relieved Kimball and pitched two scoreless innings. Chris Lugo worked the last two innings, allowing one run on one hit and a walk, to pick up his second save of the year.

Heredia and Sean Rooney each had two of the Suns' eight hits.

Two members of the Baltimore Orioles, the parent club of the Shorebirds, made rehab appearances in the game. Relievers Chris Ray and Greg Aquino each pitched one scoreless inning.

Ray gave up a single to Heredia, but struck out two in the seventh. Aquino retired all three of the batters he faced in the eighth.
