Northern Avernue attic fire ties up traffic

August 23, 2008

Nearly 60 firefighters responded Friday afternoon to a two-alarm attic fire at 850 Northern Ave.

The fire call came in at 1:36 p.m., according to emergency dispatchers. When Long Meadow firefighters arrived on the scene, a second alarm was called.

No injuries had been reported and no one had been taken from the scene as of Friday at 3 p.m., dispatchers said.

As of 3:50 p.m., four buses to North Hagerstown High School had yet to reach the school to pick up students because of fire equipment blocking nearby streets, said Richard Wright, public information director for Washington County Public Schools.

Dismissals at Fountaindale Elementary and Northern Middle schools went off as scheduled, Wright said.

In addition to Long Meadow, firefighters from Hagerstown, Maugansville, Leitersburg, Funkstown and Greencastle, Pa., responded to the scene.

Maryland fire marshals, Community Rescue Service, the emergency air and rehab units and special operations personnel also were on the scene.

No information was available Friday on the cause or extent of damages.
