Pa. girl plans breast cancer fundraiser for 13th birthday

August 22, 2008

Emily Hanlin turns 13 on Aug. 29 and despite her young age, she is planning a fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation instead of having a party with presents.

Emily wanted to do something to support her grandmother, who has breast cancer.

The celebration/fundraiser will be Sunday, Aug. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wacohu Grange at Huyetts on U.S. 40 west of Hagerstown, according to Emily's mother, Nicole Hanlin.

Tickets cost $13 each for a concert by The Ryan Payne Band of Chambersburg, Pa., an alternative Christian rock band. The lead singer, Ryan Payne, was Emily's student-teacher last year at James Buchanan Middle School.

The band will donate the proceeds from its performance, Nicole Hanlin said.

Checks may be made payable to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).

"We signed a contract with NBCF to raise money in their name," Nicole Hanlin said.

Door prizes will be raffled at the event. Additional raffle tickets will be available for a donation that evening for additional chances at the door prizes.

Emily's goal is to sell at least 101 tickets and raise $1,313 for the NBCF.

Tickets may be ordered by sending a check payable to the NBCF to Emily Hanlin, 12475 Carlson Court, Mercersburg, PA 17236.
