Pride Day set for Aug. 30

The 28th annual Maugansville Pride Day will be held at Ruritan Park on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be funnel cakes, country ham sandwiches, Italian sausages, hamburgers, steamers, hot dogs and homemade soups available. The fire company will have peanut oil fries, too. Hand-dipped ice cream will be served across the street from the park.

Free entertainment will be provided all day and Conrad Brooks, retired movie star and director, will be showing movies and signing autographs in the building.


There will be more than 50 craft vendors in the park as well as tables set up by local businesses, banks and organizations. Plenty of free parking will be available. The park is 1/2 mile west of Interstate 81 on Maugans Avenue.

Little League to hold registration

Registration will be held at the Maugansville Little League Major League field press box (above the concession stand) on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m.

T-ball is for children who must be 5 years old by May 1 and up to age 6.

Any child who turned 7 but played T-ball last year is eligible to play.

Major League is for players who turn 9 by May 1, 2009, and who will not be 13 before April 30, 2009.

Registration costs $25 and practices/games will be announced after registration has been completed.

Golf fundraiser

The inaugural Puttin' For Paws Golf Tournament, hosted by Greg and Ruth Smith, will be held at Black Rock Golf Course on Wednesday, Sept. 10 to benefit the Humane Society of Washington County.

Registration will be at 7:30 a.m. and the shotgun start will be at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $280 for pre-registered foursomes; $300 the day of the event. Lunch will be included in the cost of the tournament.

Benefit auction to be held at church

Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship in Cearfoss will hold its sixth annual benefit auction on Saturday.

Doors open at 11 a.m. Soup, sandwiches and desserts will be available at the food stand. By Faith will present a gospel concert from 11 a.m. to noon.

Auction bidding will begin at noon. A hand-stitched quilt made by church quilters, other handcrafted articles, an antique clock, gift certificates and numerous new items donated by local businesses will be included among the many items which will be offered for sale. A silent auction will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit the church's community ministry center. For more information, call 301-791-5432.

Pork dinner set for Saturday

On Saturday, Salem Reformed Church will host dinner, which will include pork, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans with corn, rolls, applesauce, cake, coffee and iced tea.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Tickets cost $8 in advance or $8.50 at the door.

The church is off Cearfoss Pike on Salem Church Road.
