'Birds hand Suns 7th straight loss

August 21, 2008

Delmarva didn't have a walk in the park on Wednesday. But the Shorebirds sure did benefit from a walk -- make that three walks -- at Municipal Stadium.

Delmarva used a bunt single and three walks -- the third coming with the bases loaded -- to come up with a run in the seventh inning to pull out a 1-0 victory over the Hagerstown Suns.

The loss was Hagerstown's seventh straight and 15th in the last 17 games.

Delmarva couldn't solve Hagerstown starter Tom Milone, who pitched six innings of four-hit, shutout ball. The Shorebirds benefited from reliever Ryan Buchter's wildness.

Buchter opened the seventh by issuing a walk to Wally Crancer. Two consecutive bunts -- a single to third by Paco Figurero and a sacrifice by Victor Castillo -- put runners at second and third.

Then, with two outs, Matt Angle drew a walk to load the bases. Ryan Adams strolled to first with the third walk of the inning and the RBI to give Delmarva a 1-0 lead.

Hagerstown managed four singles against Delmarva starter Sean Gleason in seven innings. Clifford Flagello pitched the final two for the save.

The Suns' only threat came in the second. But with two outs and runners on second and third, Bryan Miller struck out.
