Mother Seton's 234th birthday to be celebrated with Mass

EMMITSBURG, Md. - On Sunday, the anniversary of Elizabeth Ann Seton's 234th birthday will be celebrated in the Basilica at the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg, beginning with a Mass at 1:30 p.m. and followed by birthday events.

Admission and parking will be free.

This annual event is sponsored by the Seton Club of Harrisburg, Pa., and the Daughters of Charity at the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton.

This is an annual family fun day where all parents and children are welcome. Special honors will be paid to women and girls named Elizabeth Ann or Elizabeth. All Elizabeth's are invited to register at the Shrine Visitor Center between 12:45 and 1 p.m.

Following the Mass, the birthday party will continue in the courtyard for refreshments, face painting, games, prizes, and music.

In case of rain, the event will be indoors.

Visitors are welcome from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Shrine on the grounds of the Provincial House of the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg, where are located the Visitor Center, the Basilica and the Seton Shrine Museum as well as buildings that date back to Mother Seton's lifetime: i.e., the Stone House, where she first lived and the White House in which she opened the first free school for girls in the United States on Feb. 22, 1810.
