Federal wins, but fails to advance

August 19, 2008

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- The Federal Little League All-Stars beat Lake Charles, La., 6-4 at the Little League World Series but still failed to advance to the U.S. semifinals.

That's because Federal, Louisiana and Washington each finished with identical 2-1 records in their pool, but Federal lost out on a tiebreaker to the latter two teams.

Federal needed to score 12 runs and win in order to advance. Louisiana scored four times in the sixth but their rally fell short after reliever Josh Barron ended the game with a strikeout and flyout.

Ryan Byard, Andrew Yacyk and Zane Schreiber hit consecutive homers in the third inning to pace the Maryland attack.
