Course teaches how to become an effective supervisor



Hagerstown Community College's Center for Continuing Education, Business and Professional Development is offering a course titled "First Line Supervision," which focuses on providing students with the skills and techniques needed to become effective supervisors and get the most out of employees.

Offered in cooperation with the American Management Association, students will learn how to identify the roles, competencies and qualities of effective supervisors, build personal credibility and garner commitment from others, build a positive work environment, motivate employees, and deliver positive and instructional feedback.

Taught by HCC instructor Jim Cannon, this course will meet Sept. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sept. 25, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at HCC's Valley Mall Center. Cannon is a certified trainer who has taught a variety of management courses throughout the area.

Beginning Italian for travelers offered



Hagerstown Community College's Center for Continuing Education is offering a short-length course in beginning and elementary Italian specially geared toward students interested in traveling to Italy.

Taught by native Italian Elsa Bradford, the course will introduce students to the fundamentals of Italian language, will develop the necessary pronunciation skills and help build the essential vocabulary and patterns of dialogue needed for situations that are often encountered when traveling to a foreign country. Examples include the words and phrases needed for shopping excursions, dining and general travel.

The course is offered on Saturdays, from Aug. 23 through Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. to noon, in HCC's Valley Mall Center.

Certification course for bookkeepers set



This fall, Hagerstown Community College's Center for Continuing Education is offering a certification course for professional bookkeepers.

HCC has partnered with the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers to establish the certified bookkeeper credential, which consists of testing in six subject areas, signing a code of ethics and demonstrating two years of work experience as a bookkeeper.

Students will prepare for the certified bookkeeper examination by mastering the skills and knowledge required in such areas as book and tax depreciation, payroll, recording and costing out merchandise inventory, and internal controls and fraud prevention.

Taught by HCC instructor Tory VanReenen, owner of Banks & Banks Bookkeeping & Accounting Service, this course is offered on Wednesdays, from 5:30 to 9 p.m., at HCC's Valley Mall Center starting Sept. 10. The course also will be offered one Saturday a month, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., from Sept. 27 through Dec. 16 at the Valley Mall Center.
