Charles Town to feature program for juveniles

The spring stand is highlighted by the 134th running of the $1 million Preakness Stakes (Grade I), the middle jewel of racing's Triple Crown, on May 16, 2009.

Laurel Park's abbreviated summer meeting concludes Wednesday and Thursday with 3:30 p.m. twilight cards.

There will also be an afternoon card today with post time at 1:10 p.m.

At the conclusion of the meeting, live racing shifts to the Timonium for the seven-day state fair meet.

The Kentucky Derby Museum has set a date to memorialize Eight Belles. The popular filly will be interred at the museum in Louisville on Sept. 7.

Eight Belles suffered two broken ankles after finishing second to Big Brown in the 134th Kentucky Derby on May 3. She was euthanized on the track.

Eight Belles' owner Rick Porter will unveil a plaque honoring the champion filly during the public ceremony.

The plaque will be mounted under a magnolia tree where the filly's remains will be interred.

The historic Bay Meadows racetrack will soon be just history.

The final horse race at the 74-year-old San Mateo, Calif., oval is scheduled for today.

Track officials plan to sell off track memorabilia and equipment during a three-day public auction, beginning Saturday.

Developers plan to build on the site, creating more then 83 acres of housing, retail and office space.

Bay Meadows is home to the longest-running stakes event in California, the Bay Meadows Handicap, which was captured twice by the great Seabiscuit.

On this date in 2000, Zippy Chippy - loser of all 86 of his lifetime races - was defeated again, this time by minor-league baseball player and former Hagerstown Sun Jose Herrera in a 40-yard dash.

The race, called the 2000 Red Wings Derby, was held prior to a home game of the International League's Rochester Red Wings.
