Crowd of parents interested in joining Rockland Woods PTA

August 14, 2008|By ERIN CUNNINGHAM

HAGERSTOWN -- A carnival, clubs for art and drama, and a movie night at Rockland Woods Elementary School were just a few of the ideas suggested by parents during a meeting Wednesday.

About 50 parents who attended said they were interested in joining the school's first PTA, which will be starting from scratch. Several said they were interested in leadership positions.

Rockland Woods, which is opening for students next week, is the first new school to be built in Washington County in more than 15 years. Replacement schools for Pangborn and Maugansville will open next week.

Rockland Woods Principal Kathy Stiles said the large turnout at Wednesday's meeting was "exciting."

Patrick Bowers of Boonsboro said he was interested in being PTA treasurer. His son, Caleb Bowers, will be starting second grade this year at the school.

"It makes you feel good seeing all of the parents who want to be involved," Bowers said.

He said the after-school clubs and fundraising events parents suggested Wednesday sounded great, and said his son will be most interested in the art and music clubs.

Todd Stocks of Hagerstown said he is interested in participating in the PTA at Rockland Woods, where his son, Todd Stocks Jr., will be a second-grader.

"There are a lot of new ideas coming from a lot of schools across the county," Stocks said. "I just want to help out where I needed."

Kris Pearl of Boonsboro said the next steps include forming bylaws for the group, having a meeting with state PTA officials and electing officers. Pearl, whose son, Brycen Pearl, will be a third-grader at the school, volunteered to be the group's vice president.

Brandy Simms, who lives near Rockland Woods in the Westfields housing development, will have two children attending the school: Adja-Marie Simms, a fourth-grader, and John Simms III, a kindergartner. Simms said Wednesday she would like to be considered for PTA president.

Simms was a volunteer in the Emma K. Doub Elementary PTA last year when her daughter was enrolled there.

"I feel like if you want to have a say in your child's education, you have to be involved," she said.

Simms said there is a lot of work that will go into forming a new PTA, including raising funds and attracting parents who want to volunteer.

"I'm just really excited," she said. "It's good to see so many parents here."
