Car wash

Cub Scout Pack 27 will hold a free car wash (donations accepted) on Saturday at the Auto Zone on Virginia Avenue, beginning at 9 a.m. Baked goods and treats will be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the Cub Scouts' camping trips and other activities.

School starts

Washington County Public Schools will open the 2008-09 school year Wednesday, Aug. 20. Boy, did the summer fly by. Prekindergarten will have a staggered start, so call your local school for dates and start times.

Day care

Parents' Day Out, a preschool and day-care program at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church at 1020 Maryland Ave. (across from South End Shopping Center) has openings available for children ages 2 1/2 to 5. The program operates September through May on Thursdays from 9 :30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children learn through play activities. Those interested may contact 301-739-7431 for more information.


Mother's Day Out

Civil War history

On Friday, Aug. 22, beginning at 10 a.m., re-enactors from both the North and South will present a Civil War living history camp. Get a chance to come and see how soldiers would bivouac during the war between the states. Events will also be held on Saturday, Aug. 23, beginning at 10 a.m. For more information, go to on the Web.

Skate night

Turners Skate Palace (formerly Family Skate Center) on Virginia Avenue will host a Back to School Skate Night on Monday, Sept. 15, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The fee for admission is $3, which includes skate rental. Door prizes will be handed out. For more information, call 301-582-2020.
