Kimball blanks Rome in DH split

August 14, 2008

ROME, Ga. -- Cole Kimball tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout as the Hagerstown Suns defeated Rome 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday.

Rome (28-23) gained a split in the second game with a 5-1 win.

Kimball (5-8) allowed only a pair of singles -- to Chris Anderson in the third and Frederick Freeman in the seventh. He walked three but never allowed Rome more than one runner on base as he posted the first complete-game shutout by a Suns pitcher this season.

The Suns plated both runs in the first inning. Valerio Heredia led off with a single and with one out, stole second base. He scored on a single to right by Tim Pahuta. Jesus Valdez sent Pahuta to third with a single and Pahuta scored on a passed ball.

The Suns (21-31) managed five hits in each game, but managed only one tally in the nightcap.

Down 1-0, the Suns made it 1-1 in the top of the second when Garrett Bass drove in Robert Jacobsen with a sacrifice fly.

Rome touched Suns pitcher Chris Lugo (2-1) for two runs in the third inning -- both unearned -- and took a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by Freeman, his 21st of the year.
