Martinsburg man faces charges after woman is beaten

August 12, 2008

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg man was in Eastern Regional Jail on Monday night after a violent domestic altercation Sunday that left blood throughout a Martinsburg home, according to police and jail records.

Joshua Michael Hook, of 1115 W. Addition St., was charged with malicious wounding, obstructing a police officer and fleeing on foot by Martinsburg Police Department patrol officer K.M. Barrett, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records.

Magistrate Jim Humphrey set a $100,000 cash bond in an arraignment hearing Sunday.

Barrett said in her complaint that Hook was arrested earlier on two counts of domestic battery and unlawful assault, and the victim later told her that he attacked her again after being released on bail for those charges.

She said he came in cussing and screaming at her, Barrett said in her complaint. After telling him she was going to call the police, he began beating her in the head and face until she could see blood flowing everywhere, Barrett said.

"He hit her in the kidneys and ribs and continued to hit her in the face until she began spitting blood," Barrett said.

She attempted to walk out of the house and he grabbed her by the hair and began banging her head on items and throughout the house itself, Barrett said.

"She finally managed to get her kids and get out of the house to call 911," Barrett said.
