Shepherd 13th in Division II preseason football poll

August 12, 2008

The Shepherd University Rams will begin the 2008 football season where they finished the 2007 season -- as the 13th-ranked team in the country.

Shepherd, which went 10-2 and reached the NCAA Division II quarterfinals last season, is No. 13 in the American Football Coaches Association preseason rankings released Tuesday. The Rams received 268 votes from the panel of coaches.

Defending national champion Valdosta State received 17 of 26 first-place votes to lead the preseason poll.

California, Pa., which defeated Shepherd in the Northeast Region title game last year, is the highest-ranked Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference team at No. 5.

Shepherd, picked by league coaches to win its fifth straight West Virginia Conference title, opens its season Aug. 30 at Shippensburg. The Rams' home opener is Saturday, Sept. 6, against Bowie State.
