Class of 1959 plans annual picnic

The South High class of 1959 will hold its annual picnic Saturday, Sept. 6, at Devil's Backbone Park, starting at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, soft drinks and paper products will be provided by the committee. Everyone is to bring a covered dish for sharing. Tickets cost $10 per person. Reservations are due by Aug. 29. Make checks payable to "South High Class of '59."

Emma K. Doub Elementary plans open house

Meet your child's teacher at Emma K. Doub Elementary School's open house on Monday, Aug. 18.

There will be light refreshments and a brief informational meeting beginning at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. Teachers will meet and greet students and parents in classrooms from 6:20 to 6:40 p.m. Encore teachers (music, art, media and physical education) will be available from 6:40 to 7 p.m.

Introduce yourself, see classrooms and tour the building. Class lists will be posted on the front door on that day after 3 p.m.

Hagerstown Lions Club

The Hagerstown Lions Club's program Tuesday will be presented by Cathy Thomas, community manager in the Hagerstown office of the American Cancer Society. She will be speaking about "Programs and Services in Washington County."

Spaces available in church's day care

St. Andrew's preschool/day care program has spaces available for children 2 1/2 to 5 years. This opportunity runs from September through May and is on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is lots of fun and learning through group play. Diabetes support group to meet

The Diabetes Support Group at Potomac Towers will meet Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the first floor community room.

The topic will be "Diabetes and Your Kidneys." The speaker will be Trish O'Brien-Sparks from Meadow Dialysis Center.

The support group is open to individuals who live at Potomac Towers and anyone in the community. The group provides a forum for educating diabetics to help manage their disease and to gain support from other diabetics.

Movie Night

The Disciple Sunday School Class at Grace United Methodist Church will have its next movie night on Saturday, starting at 8 p.m.

The movie featured this month will be "Pinocchio." There will be free hot dogs, snow cones, popcorn and drinks. Bring your own blanket and/or chair. The movie will be shown in the parking lot across from the church. If it rains, it will be shown inside in Fellowship Hall.

School supplies

OakFirst, at 1037 Maryland Ave., Hagerstown, is accepting donations of school supplies to give to needy students. The collection will go on until Aug. 18.

Dog wash

On Saturday, the staff and volunteers at the Humane Society of Washington County will get sudsy and soapy washing people's dogs for a donation at the annual Dog Wash and "Flealess Market"/Yard Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  County residents will also have the opportunity to have their dogs, cats and ferrets inoculated against rabies and have their pets microchipped for a discounted price. County Dog licenses will be sold at the event as well.  

Shoppers are sure to find some good bargains at the "Flealess Market"/Yard Sale.  Anyone interested in obtaining a table/tent space to sell items may contact Debbie Porterfield at 301-733-2060, ext. 213.

Blood drive 

The Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross is conducting a blood drive during August.

Each donor will be entered into a grand prize drawing for a year's supply of gas, valued at $2,400, or one of five $100 gas cards offered as runner-up prizes.  

August blood drives:

o Today -- Smithsburg Fire Hall, 1 to 7 p.m.; Hagerstown Donor Center, Conrad Court, noon to 6 p.m.
