Goldie I. Bowman, 91



OCT. 17, 1916-AUG. 9, 2008

Goldie Irene Bowman, 91, formerly of Hagerstown, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at Homewood at Williamsport in Williamsport.

Born Oct. 17, 1916, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Andrew A. and Goldie M. Kidwiller Baker.

Her husband, John N. Bowman, died in 1977.

She was a member of Mount Caramel United Methodist Church, Big Pool.

She is survived by one brother, Gus Baker of Big Springs, Md., and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Bessie Beauchamp and Florance Cunningham; two half sisters, Ethel Randle and Pearl Embly, and two brothers, Frederick E. Baker and Vincent Baker.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. W. Scott Summers will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Thursday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Donna M. Fischer, 66



NOV. 12, 1941-AUG. 9, 2008

WILLIAMSPORT - Donna Marlene Fischer, 66, of 11337 Sword Road, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at her home.

Born Nov. 12, 1941, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Claudis Preston and Charlotte Marie Scott Turner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Leroy Fischer Sr., on May 3, 2008.

She was employed as a dietitian with Williamsport Nursing Home, retiring in 2006 after more than 30 years of employment.

She was of Christian faith.

She is survived by one daughter, Joni K. White of Williamsport; one son, Charles L. Fischer Jr. of Hagerstown; two sisters, Lois Gelwicks of Williamsport, and Carol Guessford of Hagerstown; two brothers, Harry Turner of Williamsport, and Wayne Turner of Falling Waters, W.Va.; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Dixie Kelley, and one brother, Doug Turner.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport. The Rev. Richard Snyder will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open Tuesday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Leonard E. Bakner, 89

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Leonard E. Bakner, 89, of 7824 Anthony Highway, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, in Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Aug. 23, 1918, in Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late Stewart E. and Susan Mae Shockey Bakner.

His wife, Elenora Kauffman Bakner, died Oct. 3, 1990. They were married Nov. 28, 1940.

Prior to his retirement in 1974, he was employed as an equipment maintenance foreman and machine shop lead foreman for Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, Pa., for 30 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of South Mountain Fish and Game Association.

He is survived by one brother, Stewart D. Bakner, and two grandchildren, James D. Bakner and Heather E. Bakner.

He was preceded in death by one son, Darwin L. Bakner; three sisters and four brothers.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. Pastor Lee Daywalt will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery, near Quincy, Pa.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.




DuWayne G. Dillon, 92



FEB. 20, 1916-AUG. 10, 2008

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - DuWayne G. Dillon, 92, of Harpers Ferry, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

Born Feb. 20, 1916, in Hibbing, Minn., he was the son of the late George D. and Ann Derickson Dillon.

He graduated from Milwaukee School of Engineering.

He retired from the State of Arizona as a maintenance supervisor.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Madden Dillon; children, Ronald J. Dillon of Redwood City, Calif., Denise M. Scheffer of Gold Canyon, Ariz., and Gary A. Dillon of Charleston, S.C.; three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town, W.Va. Dr. Henry Christie will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Evelyn J. White, 87



JUNE 27, 1921-AUG. 10, 2008

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Evelyn June Werking White, 87, of Harrisonburg, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at White Birch Estates in Harrisonburg. She died after a short illness of cancer.

Born June 27, 1921, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John D. and Frances M. Stottlemeyer Werking.
