A Smithsburg man charged in May with negligent manslaughter by automobile was in Washington County District Court Thursday to request a jury trial.

As a result, his case will be forwarded to Washington County Circuit Court.

Harry William "Billy" Shrader Jr., 45, of 12435 Pleasant Valley Road in Smithsburg, was charged in a May 25 accident on Md. 77 that killed Debra Reed Fields-Jordan, 35, of Boonsboro.

Shrader was being held Thursday night at the Washington County Detention Center, a deputy said.

Fields-Jordan was eastbound on Md. 77 on a motorcycle when a pickup truck traveling south on Pleasant Valley Road ran a stop sign at the intersection with Md. 77, police have said.

Fields-Jordan's motorcycle, which had the right of way, struck the pickup truck on the passenger side. The truck struck a tree south of the intersection and the driver fled on foot, police said.

The collision destroyed the front of Fields-Jordan's motorcycle.

Shrader surrendered to police in May at his attorney's office.

He also has been charged with failure to immediately stop at the scene of an accident involving death, failure of a driver involved in accident to render reasonable assistance to injured person, driving a motor vehicle on a revoked license, reckless driving, negligent driving, failure to stop at a stop sign and unauthorized display and use of a registration plate, according to court records.
