Theater open house

Hagerstown Children's Theater/Walker Performing Arts will hold an open house for fall classes from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16; and from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, across the street from the library.

Classes are offered in theater, vocal and instrumental music, theatrical performances, home school day classes and early childhood classes. Classes are held all season as well as in six- to eight-week-long workshops.

Medieval Maidens Day

BRUNSWICK, Md. -Book Crossing will present Medieval Maidens Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Square Corner Park.

Come to Book Crossing, 2 E. Potomac St., dressed for a festive medieval occasion. Girl Scouts and Brownies have an opportunity to earn a Try It badge. Author Lois Jarman will sign books from the Medieval Maidens series.

Youth recreation programs

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Chambersburg Recreation Department is accepting registration for the following youth programs:

Messy Munchkins - Art exploration camp for ages 4 and 5. Campers will display their work at the week's end art show. Wear old clothes. 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, through Friday, Aug. 15. Registration deadline is Monday, Aug. 4.

Sixth- to ninth-grade co-ed fall soccer league - League begins Saturday, Sept. 27. Participants will play six Saturday games and participate in one weekday evening practice. All games are at Stevens Elementary School. Everyone plays - equalized time for all participants. Registration deadline is Monday, Sept. 15.

Waynesboro YMCA programs

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -Waynesboro YMCA will offers programs at Mowery and Hooverville Elementary schools. Programs will continue at the YMCA, Fairview and Summitview schools. The program begins Tuesday, Sept. 2, and ends the last day of school. Hours of operation are from 6:30 a.m. to the start of school and after school until 6 p.m.

Character values and Bible lessons are a part of the weekly activities.

Pottery festival includes workshops for kids

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - This year's Sotto Voce Poetry Festival, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 5, through Sunday, Sept. 7, will include two poetry-writing workshops for children.

Both workshops are sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Alliance of Jefferson County, and will be free of charge.

One workshop, scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, will be for children ages 8 to 12. The instructor is Ethan Fischer, a local poet and Shepherd University faculty member.

The other workshop, scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 6, is for children ages 12 to 16. The instructor is Grace Cavalieri, who is one of the four nationally recognized writers featured at this year's festival.
