School supplies to be given away

Washington Square United Methodist Church, 538 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, will hold a free school supply giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 10 a.m.

The church is next to the Western Enterprise Fire Hall.

On the same day, a block party will take place on the parking lot, beginning at 11 a.m.

Grace Methodist, St. Matthew's, St. Mark's Baptist and Washington Square will take part.

Car wash

On Saturday, Aug. 16, starting at 9 a.m., Cub Scout Pack 27 will hold a free car wash at the Virginia Avenue Auto Zone. While waiting for your car to be washed, the Cub Scouts will have baked goods and treats available for purchase. All proceeds from the car wash and bake sale will go toward camping trips and activites.


Donations are welcomed.

Bicycle event

The Tour de Park Linn Hendershot Memorial Bike Ride for Kids of all Abilities will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8 a.m. to noon at Hagerstown Fairgrounds Park.

The ride is for ages 1 to 15, plus all persons with disabilities.

The ride is sponsored by Project Lifesaver and MIHI, Inc., a nonprofit organization. It is a fundraiser for Project Lifesaver, which provides rapid response to missing persons with autism, Alzheimer's, Down syndrome and other related brain disorders. Fundraising prizes will be given to the overall highest fundraiser as well as the top two in each age group (ages 1 to 5, 6 to 10 and 11 to 15.) Persons with disabilities may be older than 15 but will be placed in the 11 to 15 age group for fundraising prizes.

The ride will be a controled paved bike path with small hills and curves at Hagerstown Fairground Park. There are several options: 2K, 4K, 10K and a mini-K option. (maximum of five laps or 10K). The ride starts at Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex.

The grand prize will be a Nintendo Wii console with two controllers and games. For other prizes, see brochure (persons with disabilities have optional prizes.)
