Shippensburg man killed in motorcycle crash

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- A Shippensburg man died Wednesday afternoon in a fatal motorcycle crash on U.S. 11 in Southampton Township, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release.

Donald I. Moats III, 26, of Shippensburg, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:01 p.m. by Chief Deputy Coroner Ted Reed, Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner said. An autopsy will be performed today at Lehigh Valley Medical Center in Allentown, Pa., Conner said.

The accident happened at about 3:45 p.m., Reed said.

Moats, who was not wearing a helmet, was riding a motorcycle southbound just south of Clearfield Road when a 2008 Volkswagen Beetle crossed the center line and hit the motorcycle head-on, police said. Moats was thrown from his motorcycle and hit the windshield of the Beetle, police said.

The driver of the Beetle, Donald H. Wilson, 73, of Hummelstown, Pa., suffered a minor injury, police said.

The stretch of U.S. 11 where the crash occurred is straight and flat for several hundred yards.

Fire police closed U.S. 11 from the Clearfield Road intersection south to Mount Rock Road for about five hours while state police conducted their investigation of the crash. That investigation remained open Wednesday night, police said.

Shippensburg Emergency Medical Services also assisted at the scene, police said.
